James Varner Parker collection.

Consists of watercolor and pencil drawings of Southwestern and Western United States ethnobotanical plants. All plants were used by Native Americans for food, medicinal, or other utilitarian purposes. The drawings are undated and measure 11 x 14 in.; the drawings are on white illustration board with pinholes in each corner, the pencil signature "Parker", plant name on typed label on front of board and written in black ink on reverse. The drawings may have been used in conjunction with an exhibition or program at the Heard Museum, Phoenix, Ariz. Artificial collection, little or no provenance.

James Varner Parker was born in Missouri. After serving in the U.S. Army, he enrolled at Arizona State University, Tempe, where he earned both BFA and MA degrees. In 1956 he became a staff member at the Heard Museum, Phoenix, Ariz., where he served through the mid-1970s in various capacities including art educator, curator of contemporary Indian art, and assistant director.
